If my license was suspended in another state, can I still drive?

I had my license suspended in the state of Illinois and was driving in the state of Ohio on vacation, visiting relatives. Apparently they had a tail light out and I got pulled over by the police. I didn't have a license to give them obviously because my license is suspended. In hindsight, I shouldn't even have been driving the car.
