Can you be arrested for writing bad checks?

NEW YORK: I had to write two bad checks last month. I intend to pay the bills right, but had to do it so I didn't get late charges for rent and one for daycare for my daughter. Can they arrest me? Can't I just say I thought there was money in the account?

If it was a closed account it is a crime. If you had insufficient funds you can usually avoid the charges by paying the money.
