Can my son’s school search him?

He was pulled into the principels office, where they searched his clothes, his bags, and his locker. Can the school do that? I thought only the police could do that. They found a small amount of marijuana in his backpack (the school found it), and they notified police. I do not agree with what my son did or the stuff that he had, I just thought the police were the only one who could search.
