‘Barefoot Burglar’ Wreaks Havoc in Pacific Northwest

October 8th, 2009

When a private jet was stolen from Bonner’s Ferry, Idaho just across the border from Canada last week, United States’ law enforcement had a new lead on a few other burglaries that have recently taken place in the region.

According to a CNN report, a teenager known as the “Barefoot Burglar” is the prime suspect for a series of crimes that have happened in the state of Washington in the past few years.

Colton Harris-Moore was first arrested at age 12 for a burglary, and had been arrested nine times before he was 15 years old. In light of recent events, police in five Washington counties are looking for him.

After he dropped out of high school, police suspect he was preying on Camano Island, a vacation community off the Washington coast, where he burglarized homes wearing no shoes - hence the nickname “Barefoot Burglar.”

In 2007, Harris-Moore was caught and plead guilty to three burglary charges. He was represented by a criminal defense lawyer.

He allegedly left a juvenile halfway house less than one year later - and police on Camano Island started to hear of burglaries that fit the style of the Barefoot Burglar.

The criminal dropped off the radar for a while, until last November when a private airplane was stolen from the San Juan Islands. Harris-Moore again became a suspect, and authorities thought he might be island-hopping and committing these crimes, according to CNN.

After the most recent plane theft in Idaho last week, the plane was found crashed in a clearing in Granite Falls, Wash. Additional reports of petty theft have come to the police - just things like food, blankets and clothing.

As of now, Harris-Moore is considered a fugitive, and has not been taken into custody.

Riding on Top of the Minivan

October 6th, 2009

Police in Albertville, Ala. received a call over the weekend about a minivan driving down a state highway with a kid riding on the roof.

According to an Associated Press article, the 37-year-old mother driving the minivan was arrested for allowing her 13-year-old daughter to ride inside a cardboard box that was secured to the top of the minivan with a coat hanger.

The woman told police that the box wouldn’t fit inside the vehicle, so her daughter was inside it holding it down.

No one was harmed, and the girl was turned over to a relative when her mother was arrested. The woman was allegedly out on bond as of yesterday.

There is no indication that criminal charges have officially been made in this case.

Tampered Peepholes: Erin Andrews Stalker Case

October 5th, 2009

When nude videos of ESPN sports journalist Erin Andrews appeared, concern arose wondering how the video was captured.

According to a Los Angeles Times report, Michael David Barrett, 47, was charged with interstate stalking - following Andrews to hotels in different cities. While that charge may have been deserved, Andrews’ lawyer doesn’t think Barrett is solely to blame for his ability to find the journalist.

How did he know where Andrews was staying? How was he able to book a room right next to her? The Los Angeles Times reported that at a Marriott in Tennessee, the hotel staff honored Barrett’s request to room next to Andrews - begging the question: Just how private and secure are hotel guests, celebrity or not?

The peephole on Andrews’ hotel door had been damaged so a cell phone video camera was able to capture footage inside the room.

Of seven Internet videos posted of Andrews, six of them seem to have been taken at the Marriott in Tennessee. The same person who posted those videos also posted nude videos of other women in hotel rooms, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Barrett is scheduled for a hearing today that will determine if he is to be escorted in federal custody to California to officially face criminal charges for this case.

Dancing with DeLay

October 2nd, 2009

Tom DeLay, former U.S. House of Representatives majority leader, is a current competitor on the hit television series “Dancing with the Stars,” and according to an Associated Press report, DeLay is also dealing with criminal charges of money laundering and conspiracy.

The charges were originally brought against DeLay four years ago, based on state legislative elections from 2002 - and the case is now waiting to be determined by appeals courts in Texas. The case may never even go to trial, the Associated Press reported.

While the pending charges are somewhat of a nuisance for the former politician, he’s nothing but smiles when it comes to “Dancing with the Stars.”

According to the Associated Press, DeLay has a great time on stage, and even takes time to give extra attention to the judges.

Prosecutors in DeLay’s criminal case have allegedly not paid much attention to the TV show, and have said they don’t see that it would affect the case in any way.

Film Director Arrested for 1977 Sex Crime

September 29th, 2009

The well-known movie director, Roman Polanski, was recently arrested in Zurich, Switzerland by Swiss authorities because of a sex crime he committed in the United States in 1977.

In 1978, Polanski fled the U.S. to avoid sentencing for the charges against him - he allegedly had sex with a 13-year-old girl.

According to a New York Times report, supporters of the director are asking the question, “Why now?” After all, this crime was committed in a different country more than 30 years ago.

The Los Angeles district attorney’s office says the arrest was simply a matter of opportunity - Polanski was in a place at a time when the authorities “knew he would be available.”

Many people wonder why the arrest wasn’t made in the past, because authorities have apparently had the opportunity before, the New York Times reported.

Polanski has openly traveled around the world in the last 30 years - but has avoided visits to countries like Britain where extradition might be easier for Los Angeles authorities to achieve.

According to the New York Times, the victim of Polanski’s crime has publicly forgiven him.

Polanski, now 76, has appealed to Swiss authorities for his release, and a decision should be reached in the coming weeks. His defense lawyers have not made any official decisions regarding the case.

Many members of the film-directing world are very upset by the decision of American and Swiss authorities to arrest the Oscar-winning director.

Child Porn Ring Busted in Midwest

September 23rd, 2009

Four men who allegedly engaged in the making, selling and viewing of child porn in Indiana, Illinois and Wisconsin were recently caught by the FBI. The group referred to themselves as the ‘Boy Lovers.’

The criminal arrests were facilitated by another man who had been caught for child pornography crimes earlier in the year. After his own arrest, he became a cooperative witness, helping the FBI find the other participants, according to a Chicago Tribune report.

Over the course of a few months, the witness corresponded and spoke with the four men involved in the child pornography ring. Phone calls and emails were exchanged to help the FBI bring the criminal charges on the men.

If the four men are convicted of the crimes they allegedly committed, they will face prison terms of 20 years or more. The witness may still face a 10-year jail sentence.

Argument Leads to Stabbing on Chicago’s North Side

September 22nd, 2009

Walking home from the grocery store one block from my apartment early Saturday evening with the supplies to make my dinner, I passed under the train tracks and started to cross the street. I heard shouting and obscenities including the “N” word, so of course I looked around to see what was happening.

Four men were arguing in the middle of the street - exchanging some harsh words and limited physical contact, including pushing. My friend wanted to stop and watch, but I refused and kept walking, thinking to myself, “if this escalates and they have a gun, we don’t want to be anywhere near here,” even though my apartment door was merely steps away.

When we got upstairs, we started to hear sirens within three minutes, and immediately went back outside to see what had gone down.

Sure enough, there was a lifeless looking man on a backboard in the middle of the road with paramedics surrounding him, preparing to intubate him. When I saw his body twitch, I had to look away.

Another man was walking around with a blood-soaked shirt, both front and back. He had been stabbed in the shoulder. So, too, had the man on the ground - I later learned from a Chicago Tribune article.

The crowds finally cleared, but the police tape and detective investigation remained outside my building for several hours. I approached a police officer to ask how long the entire road was going to be blocked off, and he simply said, “I don’t know exactly miss, but it will be a long time - there’s been a homicide.”

That’s how I learned the man in the road had been killed. Great - a homicide outside my apartment that I moved into less than a month ago - thanks, Red line.

Overall, Chicago’s Edgewater neighborhood is quite safe - this was a disagreement between strangers that led to multiple stabbings and a death that just happened to occur outside the train stop right next to where I live. Or so I’ll keep telling myself so I can sleep at night.

As of yet, the Chicago Tribune reports that no one is in custody and no criminal charges have been pressed.

Marine Recruiters Accused of Sexual Assault

September 17th, 2009

Many marine recruiters visit schools looking for young adults to invest in serving our country. These recruiters should have the best intentions at heart when searching for our future brave men and women to serve the United States.

Unfortunately there has been a rise in the number of sexual assaults by marine recruiters. According to CBS.com, back in 2006 over 100 young women said they had been raped or sexually abused.

Of the many cases that were brought to court, one young woman filed a lawsuit stating the recruiter told her if she wanted to join the navy then she had to have sex with him. She didn’t know what to do - she was 18 years old, and she trusted this man in uniform.

In some of these cases, the relationships were romantic and initiated by the young women, but these were adult men recruiting young women into the navy and not all the women were legally adults.

In the most recent case one marine recruiter allegedly had sexual relations with a 15-year-old girl and is facing 14 felony charges. If convicted he can serve up to life in prison.

26-year-old Trevor Hooper is being charged by Salt Lake Prosecutors for rape, forcible sodomy, sexual exploitation of a minor and forcible sexual abuse.

The two met when Hooper visited her high school to recruit. They allegedly went to a motel together and engaged in sexual acts, the Salt Lake Tribune reported. The girl’s father found photos of sexual relations between her and Hooper on a memory card that contained images of the two engaged in sexual activity.

According to the Salt Lake Tribune, Sgt Damien McGee, a spokesman for the Marine Corps. recruiting station in Salt Lake City, stated that the Marine Corps. was unaware of any issues until Hooper was arrested. They are not exactly sure of the high schools visited by Hooper but advised each recruiter should visit four different schools in the surrounding area.

Sgt. Damien McGee also stated that “all marines, including recruiters, have very stringent rules to follow.”

Hooper may also face federal criminal charges in sexual exploitation of a minor as well as facing disciplinary consequences from the military.

The young girl’s name has not been released.

The Mobile Home Murders

September 15th, 2009

Neighbors feared for their lives as they waited for police to search for the suspect who killed eight in the town of Brunswick, Ga. - a small community left in the shadows in the beginning of a police investigation.

According to an Associated Press report, seven people were murdered at the scene and two were left in critical condition. The local police department is not releasing any information as to whom, how, what or why.

Neighbors wondered if the murderer was still on the loose, and many were upset that no information was being provided to ease their worried minds.  Some wanted to know if they should take matters into their own hands in fear the killer was still on the loose.  One neighbor talked about putting a gun under her pillow just to make sure she was safe at night.

The police stated they could not provide any information, as it could interfere with the investigation, and there was no known suspect in custody.  The best the police could do was to urge the neighbors to be cautious and aware of their surroundings.

After a week of not knowing if a murderer or murderers were running wild around the neighborhoods of Glynn County, the police arrested a 22-year-old man by the name of Guy Heinze who is related to all the victims.

Heinze is the one who reported the murders to the police.  He called 9-1-1 stating “my whole family is dead.” He found them after returning to the mobile home after a night out.  When police arrived at the scene they arrested Heinze.

He was initially charged with evidence tampering, lying to the police and drug possession, but was not yet accused of the murders, the Associated Press reported.

Heinze allegedly removed a shotgun from the mobile home and attempted to hide it from the police by putting it in the trunk of his car.  He allegedly told police he thought the gun was stolen and that’s why he tried to hide it.

Later that same day, the police arrested him for the murders of his family and he is now being charged with eight counts of first degree murder - since one of the two survivors, 19-year-old Michael Toler died at the hospital and became the eighth victim, ABC reported.

The victim’s names were released and they were all Heinze’s family members who lived in the mobile home together owned by his uncle, Toler Sr. According to neighbors, his uncle took in all the family members who needed help and were having hard times.  His father and uncle were among the deceased.

The only survivor of this horrible and deadly attack was three-year-old Byron Jimerson. He remains in the hospital.
For many that knew Heinze, they were surprised that he could have killed his family members.  Many of his friends and family say that they were all so close and he never seemed  like the type to commit such horrible crimes.

Heinze was not able to attend the funeral for his family.  He remained in jail while the funeral proceedings were carried on.

This White Collar Crime Gives Lawyers Something to Search For

September 8th, 2009

Richard Scrushy - founder of Health South Corp. - was ordered to pay company shareholders a total of nearly $3 billion after an accounting scam - said to be the highest amount ever pressed upon a single executive. Scrushy is currently in jail for a seven-year sentence for a political bribery case.

The white collar crimes Scrushy has committed are making things difficult on lawyers, who are trying to locate all his assets to compensate for the huge payoff he owes. He was found in contempt of court for failing to provide details about his assets, according to a Wall Street Journal report.

Scrushy’s wife and kids left Alabama, where most of Scrushy’s assets have been found so far - and went to Texas. Ms. Scrushy’s lawyer says she removed only the things from her home that belonged to her or her children.

Scrushy will be questioned about his assets this week - but the search for everything is expected to take over a year, the Wall Street Journal reported.
