Rapper Wiz Khalifa, who has famously promoted the use of marijuana, was cited last week for marijuana possession by police in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, according to a recent report from the Winston-Salem Journal.
Khalifa was cited by police for possession of pot after a police officer reportedly smelled a suspicious scent wafting from the rapper’s tour bus, according to the search warrant that was filed in the case.
The 24-year-old rapper had performed earlier that night at Winston-Salem’s Joel Coliseum, where more than 2,000 fans listened to Khalifa perform his favorite songs, including his most successful single, “Black and Yellow.”
That night, sources say that an officer in the Winston-Salem Police Department had been dispatched to the concert to target concert-goers who might be using or selling illegal drugs in the parking lot of the arena.
When the police officer arrived at Khalifa’s tour bus, he reportedly “detected a strong odor of burnt or burning marijuana” and quickly obtained a search warrant to walk through the vehicle.
The officer found marijuana, although the police have not yet announced how much pot they found. A recent report from celebrity website TMZ, however, claims that the police seized more than 11 grams of marijuana.
After the incident, observers immediately question Khalifa’s decision to be so brazen in his use of marijuana, given that the rapper, whose real name is Cameron Jibril Thomaz, was arrested just a few weeks ago on another drug charge.
Sources say that Khalifa was charged with having marijuana in his Nashville hotel room in late April, and this charge is still pending in a Tennessee court.
In addition to his troubles in Winston-Salem and Nashville, Khalifa was also cited for pot possession in 2010 after a concert at East Carolina University, although the charges brought against him for that incident, including a serious drug trafficking count, were eventually dropped.
The consequences of his most recent incident may be more serious, as sources say that at least 18 people have been charged with drug possession, including one felony count of possessing ecstasy.
Khalifa seems to be taking the charges in stride, as he reportedly posted a few relaxed comments on his Twitter feed saying that the local police were just doing their “job.” To be fair, he does have a bit of experience in brushing off incidents with the police.
The rapper grew up in Pittsburgh but now lives in Hollywood, California, where he is trying to establish himself as an actor to supplement his work as a rapper.
