Senator Larry Craig To Resign After Arrest and Guilty Plea In Bathroom Sex Scandal

Republican Senator Lary Craig from Idaho says that the only thing that he did wrong was to plead guilty to a misdemeanor charge of lewd conduct without consulting a lawyer.

Craig was arrested in a sex sting in an airport men’s room after he allegedly used foot and hand signals to gesture that he was interested in a sexual encounter with an undercover police officer in the bathroom stall next to him.

The officer and Craig disagree about almost everything that happened in the incident and Craig says that he only pled guilty to try to make the situation go away.  He has publicly denied being gay.

There has been virtually no public support for Craig, even among his own party.

Craig has served in Congress as an Iowa Senator for more than 25 years.  He was up for re-election next year but is expected to resign tomorrow as a result of the bathroom sex scandal.

  1. Private Investigator Says:

As a defense investigator I know that many persons who are factually innocent, later plea guilty to the charge, or often to a lesser charge. However there are usually many other factors that contributed them to do so (including but not limited to.)

They can not afford a good defense.
    An incompetent defense
The embarrassment of a trial (probably the Senators reason, or perhaps he was guilty
Coercion and/or false promises by the DA, the defense attorney and/or the police officer.
    Clients mental capabilities, incompetence ect.
The stresses involved in a trial
The consequences of a guilty verdict, vs what was better offered if they plead out.

Nonetheless, how can a U.S. Senator make that mistake of pleading guilty, if he is in fact innocent? This is a man that makes crucial votes in our U.S. Capital? Folks, if America wants to survive, I believe all political parties need an ‘ethics’ cleansing. It is wrong for one political party to just wink and nod at the lies, sins and/or corruptions of its own leaders; While only pointing their fingers at the ‘other’ party.
