Judge Releases Georgia Man From 10-Year Prison Sentence

A 21-year-old man Georgia man was released from his 10-year jail sentence for having consensual sex with a minor. Genarlow Wilson was convicted of having oral sex with a 15-year girl when he was 17-years old. He has served two years of a mandatory 10-year sentence. Now he will be released from jail.

The Georgia law under which Wilson was convicted has since been rewritten by the Georgia legislature. The crime has been reduced to a misdemeanor, requiring no more than 12 months in jail.

The judge ruled Wilson’s sentence to be void, meaning that it never happened. Wilson had faced many more years in jail and being listed as sex offender for the rest of his life.
