Soldiers Arrested for Looting in Tornado-Ravaged Town

Soldiers from Fort Riley, Kansas and a reserve police officer were arrested for looting cigarettes and alcohol from a store in the remains of Greensburg, Kansas. Greensburg was practically destroyed by an F-5 tornado this past weekend.

Kansas’ adjutant general said the officers went to Greensburg on their own and were not part of any official detachment. However, since all five soldiers were in uniform, they could be seen as operating under the color of authority. The soldiers were allowed to come and go as they pleased because of their dress.

This despicable incident is just another example why soldiers should never be used to patrol American streets with the authority of police officers.
