Anthony Abbate, a 12-year veteran of the Chicago Illinois police force, was charged with aggravated battery for attacking a local woman bartender. Abbate was off-duty and dressed in civilian clothes when he was caught on video beating a female bartender, less than half his size.
Abbate has been placed on leave pending an internal investigation. A Chicago police department spokesman said she expects Abbate to be fired.
A video shows the 250-pound Abbate shouting at the 115-pound bartender, then walking behind the bar and punching her, throwing her to the ground, and kicking her. The bartender’s attorney said the attack begin after she refused to serve the officer. Prosecutors say the bartender had attempted to stop Abbate from attacking another patron.
The officer’s attorney said he had recently completed a substance abuse treatment program, and that he had never been disciplined since joining the Chicago police department in 1994.
